Susan Sontag reminds us that "photographs echo other photographs." When we see something in a photograph, we are also seeing something else, something there and not there, a haunting and an echo of of other images that have served to frame a way of seeing a face, or a place, or a way of life. The photographs in this collection reflect upon Appalachia as a region and ask us to listen for the echoes and to understand the ways in which this place has spoken to photographers for well over a century--and how photographers have defined this region, for better and for worse, through these powerful frames. #AppalachianEchoes offers a "place memory" collection that explores Appalachia as a region and an identity. It gathers together a range of reflections on Appalachia's past and present--a story of the region told through a constellation of images and words.
