I grew up in Birmingham, Alabama and moved away when I was twelve. I did not learn much about Dr. King and the Civil Rights Movement until after I had left. It just was not part of the curriculum in those days... some wounds are slow to heal. I have children of my own now so the importance of looking at and learning from our past is something that strikes home and the lessons learned in my home town are ones that we are still learning today. It might take a few generations but we can all share Dr. Kings dream and work to continue making it a reality. Teach your children well !

Thanks Amber ! My recent visit home and to Kelly Ingram Park had this on the top of my mind. If anyone gets to Birmingham... I would highly encourage them to take the time to really walk the park, the heritage trail, and visit the Civil Rights Institute. Birmingham is finally coming to terms with its past and I was impressed, to say the least, at the thoughtful and artistic way they translated it into the public spaces downtown. It really moves you to think.
