Precious little pre-Incan gold remains. What the Incas didn't melt down, the Conquistadors did. Pictured here is a gorgeous Chimu headdress and breastplate from the 14th century (just before Incan rule). The Larco Museum is a must-see on any visit to Lima. This private museum boasts one of the world's largest collections of pre-Columbian art with over 45,000 pieces. The vast majority are ceramic vessels in all manner of shapes and sizes, but it's also one of the few places where you can see (and photograph) original gold and silver pieces. Don't miss it!

    I loved this Museum too and its gardens and restaurant! I'm not sure the Incas did most of the melting. For them, these were sacred objects

    @Hipermovil - I read somewhere that the Incas melted down a bunch of pre-Incan gold to cast their own sacred objects, but perhaps they didn't do it all the time.

    Yes, you are right. The gold melting story line would be Chinu, Incas and then the Spaniards. It's sad really that most of it is gone!
