On a Sunday morning mid Sept 1963, the KKK planted a bomb in the NE stairwell of this church killing four young girls in their Sunday school class and injuring many others. Just a few minutes before the bomb these little girls had been in the basement talking about their first days at school. This set off marches in protest and extreme police brutality against so many. One cannot visit the memorial in the church and not feel a surge of emotion at the pain and grief this heinous act caused. Over 800 children were jailed after skipping school to protest this act.
