The only time in your life you can eat whatever you want guilt-free is the day you go to Diamond Head to check out some pretty bitchin' views of Waikiki. This tuff cone is known to Hawaiians as Lē‘ahi. According to Wikipedia, that name is most likely from lae ‘browridge, promontory' plus ‘ahi tuna' because the shape of the ridgeline looks like the shape of a tuna's dorsal fin. Whatever, I just wanna know how it's really pronounced. When the English came along they couldn't pronounce it either. They decided to call it Diamond Head because they mistakenly thought that calcite crystals they found in the rock were diamonds. Honest mistake, I guess. The path you take is one used by soldiers at Fort Ruger, the first U.S. military reservation on Hawaii. Nowadays there's only a National Guard facility. The steps pictured above are the lousy part. If you're claustrophobic, the tunnels might get to ya. Parts of the army base were featured in the television show Lost and there also used to be a game show filmed here back in 1975 called The Diamond Head Game. I know, clever title right? Anyway, Bob Eubanks hosted the show and final contestants could go into the Money Volcano and catch real money that was flying around. That would be rad. I, for one, think they should bring that part back. After all, it'd be great for tourism. Just be sure you give that cheeseburger a minute to chill before you roll to the top. If you're in decent shape, it's just a thigh burner. Bring some water, you'll be mouth-breathing at the top for a minute... #tonythesnarkeytraveller #hawaii #oahu #stairs #thighburner #holyshitiminhawaii
