Eastern State Penitentiary open in 1829, and is considered the worlds first true penitentiary. The word "penitentiary" is derived from the word "penitence". A place designed for inmates to be rehabilitated. One of the most notable inmates that was housed here was none other than Al Capone. His cell is a huge attraction where the interior is still decorated around the time period when he was a resident there.
